Excellent for young readers

These series of books by Thornton Burgess were written about 100 years ago. They are delightful stories for young readers to expose them to the lives of animals. Very fanciful and not serious, they perk the interest of young readers that animals have social lives, have adventures and perils, and allow the young reader a feeling of intimacy with animals. My 9 year old daughter truly loves these books. We've found a big adventure together trying to collect most of the books. There are more than 20 of them, many long out of print. I believe this is better reading than the current popular books which are for teenage readers. Try reading these books to your 5 year old, a priceless time together for father and daughter. When she became 8 she began reading them for herself. No finer children's books for young readers.

Great book!

At first I thought this book would be dry like every other math book, but when I actually sat down and read it, I realized it was far from boring. You can read each chapter individually; you don't have to read the bool left cover to right. If math was taught in high school with this book, kids may find it more interesting and, dare I say, relevant.

KOONTZ AT HIS ABSOLUTE BEST

I've read many Koontz novels and for me he has always been a "hit or miss" author. Sometimes very good, sometimes not so good. The first time I read this book I honestly thought to myself that someone ELSE wrote it and used Koontz's name. Not that I had any idea how anyone could get AWAY with such a thing, mind you. It's just that I thought the book was so over-the-top EXCELLENT that I couldn't believe Dean Koontz had written it. Since then, however, Mr. Koontz has had several novels that, in my humble opinion, really knocked it out of the park - so he has indeed proven himself to be capable of outstanding writing. From the Corner of His Eye, however, will always remain my favorite. Not only have I recommended it to every reader I know, but I've read it myself - in its entirety - at least 5 times. For me, this book has it all: suspense, intrigue, excitement, and tremendous heart. Pulls every emotion from extreme anger to utter despair. Had me laughing out loud in places and bawling my eyes out in others. Incredible characters and every last little loose end and detail wrapped up at the end. An outstanding work of art here, folks - and a truly entertaining read. Well done, Mr. Koontz, well done.

This is my favorite Dean Koontz book

This is my favorite Dean Koontz book. I have re read it several times during the years. It is ALWAYS the book I recommend to people when introducing them to Dean Koontz. So far everyone that has read it from my recommendation has loves it. One of my friends grandmother who is in her early 80s (years of age) found the book on his shelf when she was visiting. He saw her sit down to read the preface before going to bed. When he woke the next morning and went to check his Grandmother... she has just finishing the book!!!! She stayed awake all night reading the book and told him she could not put it down. He was AMAZED that she not only enjoyed the book but had stayed awake reading for over 10 hours!!!!

This was his finest hour

Being an avid reader I have over the years, come to believe that each teller of tales has either consciously or unconsciously, a portion of the truth behind this physical universe we find ourselves in. For me, this is especially true with this volume. Some have criticised the lengthly descriptions as being overlong. I find them completely complementary to the story.

More and more, we are being drawn towards the subject of quantum physics, where, at subatomic levels, energy becomes though and effect precedes cause. Dean has pointed us towards the concept of faith and science coming together at this sub atomic level, and pointing I think to the domain of the creator or if you like, Supreme Being.

I think that a universe so complex cannot, to any rational being, be dismissed as happenstance. That we go on, either to other lifetimes or ascend to higher etherial levels must be given serious consideration.

Certainly this is a shot in the arm to seekers after truth.

In this volume, Dean has, in my opinion, pointed the way for serious thinkers, nay believers, to follow their own star to the level of spiritual perfection that we must all eventually aspire.

I do hope that Dean will be inspired to give us more of the same, so like the sower and the seed, some of it will find fertile ground and reproduce an hundredfold.

The narrative of 'Monkey Suits' follows the lives of five waiters, and a well-known married couple of the society set, from autumn 1988 to spring 1989.

Lee Wyndam, shy and unfocused, finds that his work-related affairs lead to more problems than passion. But when a secretive affinity group leads him to the liberating world of AIDS activism, his true passion may finally blossom with Cal, a biracial videographer.

Brian Burns, Lee's insufferably handsome ex-boyfriend, thinks the world owes him a living. His foray into 'the oldest profession' leads to a strange encounter with a formidable and familiar client.

Ed Seabrook, Brian's current boyfriend, is one of few who actually enjoys his job. Along with Marcos Tierra, a club "celebutante" between catered parties, and Ritchie Hurst, a (mostly straight) struggling sculptor, each young man sees his life and beliefs collide with society scions at a tumultuous AIDS benefit hosted by Trish Fuller. Her husband Winston Fuller's homophobic editorials spur the protest.

Although mostly set at uptown parties in late '80s Manhattan, like one of the novel's characters, Provenzano lived for a few years in nearby Jersey City. A few chapters are set there, and in the World Trade Center PATH station.

'Monkey Suits' captures an historic time in New York City life, as well as the revolutionary AIDS activism of that era. An array of Egyptian references weave a metaphoric perspective, evoking an empire of contrasting wealth and servility.

Jim Provenzano is the author of the novels Every Time I Think of You (a 2012 Lambda Literary Award winner) and its sequel Message of Love, PINS, Monkey Suits, Cyclizen and the stage adaptation and Audible audiobook edition of PINS. The Waiter World

The problem with this novel is that of many second novels; it is not as good as the amazing PINS, Mr. Provenzano's first novel. While the author wrote about the world of high school wrestling teams in PINS, here he writes about the waiter world (thus the name MONKEY SUITS since those who carry food to our tables usually are clad in those uncomfortable suits with cummerbunds). It's certainly not a bad novel and is an easy read. It just doesn't have the passion, at least for me, that his first one did. Set in Manhattan in the late 1980's-- The elder Bush is elected president during the course of events-- the novel follows the lives of several gay "cater" waiters and one mostly straight one, Ritchie, who-- whether intentional or not on the part of the author-- comes across as one of his most endearing characters. There are other characters to care about as well: Kevin, for one, who is active in ACT-UP when he isn't waiting tables. But many of the other people aren't very sympathetic. They work for the people, high society types, who treat them badly even while raising money for AIDS. They do not lift a finger to help themselves-- unless you count the occasional passive agressive spitting in someone's food. And the use of feminine pronouns to refer to men is way past overdone. Additionally, the scene at the AIDS benefit at the Metropolitan Museum degenerates into slapstick. I thoroughly expected a food fight. Finally, at two different places in the novel the author inserts a page of quotations at the end of chapters (pages 108 and 165) that just seem to float. I have no idea what that's all about.

MONKEY SUITS is far better than a lot of contemporary "gay" novels and certainly covers an area not usually written about. It's probably unfair to expect this novel to be as fantastic a story as PINS. Mr. Provenzano obviously is capable of writing very fine stories and most likely will do it again. I'll read them cheerfully.

What was it like to be an out gay man in New York City just as the AIDS activist group ACT UP became popular? And what's it like to serve dinner to the wealthy who ignored the AIDS crisis while struggling with your own growing anger?
This is what author Provenzano explores in an ensemble novel about a group of waiters, some of whom ignore the crisis, others who work within the echelons of upscale servants before abandoning that world.
While not as impassioned, deeply symbolic and poetic as his first novel, 'Pins,' he does weave amusing metaphors of Egyptian culture (and Anubis/dogs as well), portraying Manhattan as a slave culture of sorts. The handsome, gay men in the book have their lives intermingling.
Chapters shift mostly from one guy to another, with a few asides for a sarcastic yet humane portrayal of a socialite who means well, but becomes the subject of a bumbled protest because of her homophobic husband.
While the depiction of a Marianne Williamson-type "faith healer" doesn't work as a parody (the quoted "God Did Not Create AIDS, therefore AIDS Does not Exist" was actually one of her obtuse mantras), it seems to be a critique in contrast to the eventual activist stance of the main character, Lee.
With its rich detail, based on obvious experience in both worlds, Provenzano's narration takes on a dishy character all its own, extolling the excess. Urban and urbane, the humor is sometimes sidetracked by too-brief touching moments; the waiters stopping to hear a mourning co-worker play at a piano, one character's coming out as HIV-positive under a Central Park snowfall. Yet it captures an era now lost, and makes one wonder who among these tuxedoed men may have survived.

I wasn't expecting anything like PINS,the author' first, and it wasn't.
But once again, a whole subculture is thoroughly explored, this time in 80s New York among a sort of hive of worker bees; cater waiters, mostly gay. His details are expansive and dishy, like a sort of gossip columnist who went to these parties.
The interaction between the characters, whle sometimes pithy, develops into hurt, anger, fear of AIDS, or denial of it, and passion. Some of the sex scenes (in unusual places!) are hilarious.
Instead of forcing an activist agenda, he shows how some people become swept up in it, to their own benefit (Lee and Cal), deal with it in their own quiet way (Ed), or race through it (Brian). The difference between these guys made it feel like the ensemble style of "Queer As Folk," but the setting's more like "Bonfire of the Vanities."
The whole story is framed around what these guys do in, and out of, their tuxedoes. The plot doesn't really jump at you, but escalates. The clever blend of fact and fiction edges close to a few celebrity outings (!!), but it's really about the transformation of some otherwise invisible servants in Manhattan.

Ebook needs work

i just bought this kindle edition to get more details on a specific area of poweshell. Not seeing a chapter dedicated to what I was looking for.
I say to myself , "no worries , i just look at the index for my cmdlet".

The index is not listed in the table of contents. Bad omission for a tech book

The sad part is I saw the concepts I was looking for in the index , but have no idea where in this book they are. I know what it takes to write a technical book , and am sure the authors tok great pains to deliver the best book they could write, unfortunately it didnot translate well to the ebook form

memo to legacy technical book publishers ... It's not enough to simply sell me an electronic copy of your content , you need to leverage the platform your publishing to.

Do you want to learn PowerShell 2.0?

This is a well written, easy to read and understand computer book. If you have never used PowerShell or if you need to brush up your PowerShell skills, this is the book for you. As you read through the book, PowerShell terms and concepts are presented in a manner that allows you to easily grasp the concepts presented. The book builds a foundation of PowerShell knowledge and increasingly introduces more complex topics which build upon that foundation. As you move through the book, easy to understand examples allow you to work along on your computer as you read the book. This style of presentation is what makes this book so good. If you want to learn PowerShell or just want to brush up on your skills, this is the book for you!

A great starting place for the PowerShell beginner and great read for the more advanced PowerSheller

The number of PowerShell books are rising and coverage varies. I am currently going through many of the PowerShell books that are out there now and reading as well as reviewing the different approaches to explaining PowerShell. I have to give these authors big time credit because the actual process that they use to explain PowerShell is wonderful. Brains work in various ways but I think they have started from a solid point and then built on it in very sound steps. I noticed they present some ideas and examples early on that would help people wrap their heads around the different concepts that PowerShell delivers and also give them something they can practice and use in PowerShell right away. In my opinion this is a great book for the PowerShell beginner as well as a formidable reference to strengthen your grasp of PowerShell. Good job guys, I love when IT books are delivered this way.

Then the student should look thru the solutions and find where he/she went wrong. The student should identify his/her weak areas and spend more time studying those areas. Great book. Some of the problems from the PE were almost the same. Totally worth the cash. The only thing I didn't care for was some of the answers didn't show the quickest way to solve them. There are a lot easier ways to solve most of the problems than shown in the solutions.

The problems are easier than other books, but they are set up well and the solutions are laid out nicely and easy to follow. I also like that they have some problems where the answer you get is not exactly what the answer choices are making you question yourself.

About the Author

Myles A. Wickstead, Visiting Professor, International Relations, Open University and King's College London. Advisor to 'Development Initiatives' and 'Hand in Hand International'

Myles Wickstead OBE, was educated at St Andrews' University and New College Oxford. Most of his career has been spent in the Department for International Development and its predecessors and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He coordinated the 1997 White Paper 'Eliminating World Poverty: A Challenge for the 21st Century'; then represented the UK on the Board of the World Bank (and was simultaneously Counsellor, International Development at the British Embassy in Washington); was British Ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti from 2000 to 2004; and was Head of Secretariat to the Commission for Africa from 2004 to 2005. Myles has been Visiting Professor (International Relations) at the Open University since the end of 2005.

Perfect brainwashing about aid

Old school view of aid; predictable, conventional view of aid and the MDGs, with absolutely no critical comments about the current situation and the fact that aid serves the elites of both the donor and recipient countries but hardly ever their population. No hint of an attempt to answer questions like "for every pound of aid how much ends up in the pocket of those it is supposed to help?". If you want to read a book that eschew all the important questions and regurgitates all the official verbiage about foreign aid, this is the book for you.

If you want to understand how aid works today and why it is the way it is -- money and expertise flowing to help the poorest of the poor -- this is the book for you. A lucid tour of recent history that also summarizes today's development issues. A book that is readable and concise. Really well written. Wickstead's experience and knowledge comes through.
