Atlas of igneous rocks and their textures A companion volume to the Atlas of Rock-forming Minerals in Thin Section, this full-colour handbook is designed to be used as a laboratory manual both by elementary students of earth sciences undertaking a study of igneous rocks in thin section under the microscope, and by more advanced students and teachers as a reference work. The book is divided into two parts — Part One is devoted to photographs of many of the common textures found in igneous rocks with brief descriptions accompanying each photograph. Part Two illustrates the appearance of examples of some sixty of the commonest (and a few not so common) igneous rock types; each photograph is accompanied by a brief description of the field of view shown. Nearly 300 full-colour photographs are included, and in many cases the same view is shown both in plane-polarized light and under crossed polars. A brief account of how thin sections can be prepared is included as an appendix. It is believed that the amateur geologist using these instructions will be able to make his own thin sections and, with the aid of a relatively simple microscope, enjoy the study of rocks in thin section.

Great resource

This atlas is a great resource and supplement to other 'atlases' of rocks and minerals in thin section. The micrographs are excellent quality and the descriptions are excellent. No such book can be comprehensive but this atlas covers a broad variety of igneous rocks and includes some unusual rocks that most geologists will never encounter. There is an added bonus: the appendix contains step-by-step instructions for preparing thin sections without expensive equipment.

I used this book while taking my Petrology class. It was a life saver! When I was a teaching assistant a year later, my students found the information very informative and useful in the lab. The description of textures is great for beginners and for advanced student review.

It contains a lot of thin-section photo of igneous rocks. By reading the atlas of igneous rocks, we can classify their rocks type. It is a very great book for studying igneous rock.

Grade 4-6-Superficial looks at Truman, Nixon, and Carter. Using the same format throughout, the books open with material about each subject's early life and then discuss his political career and rise to the presidency. They briefly cover the main events of each man's administration and post-White House years, before concluding with a short analysis of how the individual and his years in office are viewed by the public and historians. Each book also includes several one-page sidebars about important people and events, as well as comments and quotes in the margins. The authors are objective, mentioning each man's strengths and weaknesses, including coverage of Watergate and Nixon's resignation. The books are attractive, with numerous black-and-white and full-color photos. However, that attractiveness is overshadowed by the extreme brevity. Each volume has only 37 pages of large-print narrative, most with photos, and the balance of the pages is used for a time line, glossary, listing of all presidents, and bibliography. As a result, these titles offer little more information and analysis than that found in an average encyclopedia entry. Most libraries would be better served by titles from the "Encyclopedia of Presidents" series (Children's), which offers a much more comprehensive look at each leader, his political career and presidential administration, and his legacy.

Gr. 3-5. These two books in the new Spirit of America: Our Presidents series focus on men who ascended to the presidency without an electoral mandate. Francis' book is the more smoothly written, but both, like many series biographies, offer report writers quick facts in roughly chronological order. Neither author spends much time on controversial issues that marked the men's terms in office; for example, Ford's pardoning Nixon and Truman's decision to use atomic weapons are dispensed with so quickly kids might even miss the events' historical impact. The photos, mostly black and white, and the sidebar fast facts work fairly well; boldface terms are a bit too intrusive. The Web sites listed will be helpful, though the books' bibliographies seem overly dependent on other books in the series. It's helpful to have each president covered in a separate volume, but to ensure kids get a real sense of the individuals and the history, have other books on hand, too. Excellent Plus

I grew up dining on Cantonese American cuisine and loved and worshipped it. The NY restaurants of the 1950s and 1960s were simply fabulous as a rule.

And then the odd Hunan, Szechuan or Peking dish entered the scene. Who can forget their first dish of Mu Shu Pork or Peking Dumplings with hot sesame oil? Or Kung Po Chicken or Hunan Hot and Spicy Chicken? It was all quite great at first...... And then so many Chinese American restaurants bent to fast food practices and food safe rules. Oh yes, I discovered the impact of food safe laws when I requested some old time crunchy bean sprouts! "We have to cook them longer by law!"

In this fast food world so many things are called Szechuan or Hunan that bear little resemblance to their original forms.

I appreciate Henry Chung's book greatly for the true picture of Hunan cuisine it represents. This is both a good recipe book and a good read, but more than that, it is a treatise on Hunan cuisine that goes far beyond the typical stereotypes in communicating the character of this region's fare.

I used to work in my wife's parents Chinese restaurant. I also spent 2 years living in China with my family .. that made me understand that Hunan food is my favorite. More spicy than most Chinese food, but not the pure hotness of Schezhuan. I have a lot of Chinese cook books, so I purchased this one not expecting much new ... however I find that I refer to this one more than any others. Henry does an excellent job in describing recipes that taste great with ingredients you can easily obtain. I love this cookbook.

Found out about the book from a tip, a friend telling us we had to try Henry Chung's in San Francisco. Yumm! Bought the book as we are trying to learn to cook Chinese. We go through a lot of cookbooks, generally if by the third or fourth recipe we have not found something delightful, the book goes upstairs. Only a few survive to live on our relatively small pile in the kitchen. Everything we have cooked from Henry Chung's book has been excellent. He has taken the complex style of Hunan cooking and brought it to the American home kitchen quite effectively. And this was in the mid 80's when cooking Chinese was new to Americans. In a league with Mama Leone's cookbook!!
