Beloved Parables in a Middle Eastern Context

Kenneth Bailey is a New Testament scholar with a unique area of academic focus. His expertise is the Middle Eastern context of the New Testament with a particular focus on the Gospels. "Finding the Lost" examines the cultural context of Luke 15--Jesus parables of the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, and the Prodigal Son. While Bailey has written on these parables before, he writes that his understanding of these parables has changed as he now sees close connections between Luke 15 and Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my Shepherd...").

The book is divided into six chapters. The first is an Introduction to the differences between the Middle Eastern culture of the 1st Century and Western culture of the 21st Century and scholarly methods employed to help bridge the gap. This reader found this chapter fascinating. The first chapter examines the parable of the Lost Sheep in the light of Middle Eastern culture, Psalm 23, Jeremiah23:1-4, and Ezekiel 34:11-16. Bailey caused this reader to think about the Lost Sheep parable at a deeper level than ever before. The second chapter examines the parable of the Lost Coin. Again, Bailey illuminates the parable by showing the reader how Middle Easterners would have heard it. The third chapter covers the first half of the Prodigal Son parable--the relationship between the younger son and the father. Much emotion is drawn out of the parable, especially the public humiliation suffered by the father and the great shame the younger son brings upon himself. The fourth chapter deals with the second half of this parable--the relationship between the older son and the father. Bailey convincingly shows that the older son is just as shameful (if not more so) than the younger son. He also proves that the older son's refusal to enter the banquet and his argument with his father was a purposeful attempt to shame and humiliate both his father and his brother. One final chapter attempts to make clear the 13 connections Bailey draws between Luke 15 and Psalm 23.

In all, the book was an illuminating read and will certainly influence the way I read these parables, teach them, and preach them. Indeed, Bailey provides enough material for many, many sermons. However, I cannot give this book five stars because I walk away unconvinced that Bailey has proved his premise--that Luke 15 should be read through the window of Psalm 23. While it is true that there are parallels between these two beloved chapters, drawing parallels does not prove the hermeneutical relationship he theorizes. Thus, I would highly recommend this book--not to gain new insights into the relationship between the Psalms and the parables--but to gain valuable new insights into the three beloved parables of Luke 15, to understand Middle Eastern Christian theology, and for an entertaining read.

Dr. Bailey was a professor of mine in Jerusalem. It is a joy to find his teachings collected in this book. The cultural understandings of scripture make such a wonderful difference for us today.

Luke 15: The Gospel within the Gospel

This is an insightful text that will help one better understand Jesus as a metaphorical theologian.

Bailey has spent over 35 years studying in the Middle East and Luke 15. We in the West don't always get it right and Bailey convincingly points out how the West has mistranslated and misinterpreted significant parts of Luke 15.

Bailey believes that this was one of Jesus' sermons that he gave as he traveled throughout Judea. What is Jesus saying? He redifined repentance to mean repentance is accepting God's costly gift of finding us. Repentance is not something we do. Also, the Father is a metaphor for God but Jesus uses the simile of a mother for God. In addition, Jesus himself is identified with the Father as Jesus attempts to answer why he eats with sinners and tax collectors. Jesus is saying much more then there is space to write here. He explores in detail the themes of sin, grace, repentance, Christology, Fatherhood, joy, family, community, freedom, atonement, and eschatology.

Geek reading a Marketing book. Who knew it was just what I needed

If you’re interested in how the new social world for business really works and how to translate your social skills to a digital social world and engage relationships this book is for you. Great insight into how social media is a great medium but how you need to retool to have effective relationships. I’m a storyteller by nature and this book has some really great stuff on how to translate that into a digital medium.

About the Author
Don W. Stacks, PhD, is Professor of Public Relations in the School of Communication at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida. He served as Director of the Public Relations Program from 1995 to 2009 and Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Creative Support from 2009 to 2013. Dr. Stacks has written more than 300 scholarly articles and papers and has authored or coauthored 10 books on communication topics. He is the recipient of honors including the Outstanding Educator Award from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA); the Jackson, Jackson, and Wagner Behavioral Science Prize from the PRSA Foundation; and the Distinguished Research Fellow and Distinguished Teaching Fellow awards from the Eastern Communication Association. Dr. Stacks has been an active communication consultant since the 1970s. His areas of expertise include organizational systems assessment, sociological/psychological organizational analysis, media relations, internal organizational communications, and leadership; he is also a trained listening specialist. Dr. Stacks serves on the editorial boards of numerous communication and public relations journals, is editor of Communications Research Reports (vols. 31–33), and directs the annual International Public Relations Research Conference. He is a trustee of the Institute for Public Relations and the Arthur W. Page Society and serves on the boards of the International Public Relations Association and the Commission on Public Relations Measurement and Evaluation.

Just as good as previous version

I didn't buy the latest version, and I'm glad I didn't because it's about the same when I compared them. Be prepared for this to be dense, and only black and white pics. If you are looking for animated, fun pictures this is not the book for you. For my purposes this book is very straightforward despite it being dense.

Effie Kammenou is a first generation Greek-American who lives on Long Island with her husband and two daughters. When she’s not writing, or posting recipes on her food blog, cheffieskitchen.wordpress.com, you can find her cooking for her family and friends. Her debut novel, EVANTHIA’S GIFT, is a women's fiction multigenerational love story and family saga, influenced by her Greek heritage, and the many real life accounts that have been passed down. She continues to pick her father’s brain for stories of his family’s life in Lesvos, Greece, and their journey to America. Her recent interview with him was published in a nationally circulated magazine. As an avid cook and baker, a skill she learned from watching her Athenian mother, she incorporated traditional Greek family recipes throughout the book. Greek-American Saga of Family Life

This novel is a Greek-American saga told over several decades. In today’s terms the families and children are co-dependent, deeply religious and enmeshed and it all—ultimately--works for them. The struggles for true love are cataclysmic, seismic in their effect on the families but unlike modern society with its godlessness, abortion and families-without-fathers and mothers-without-partners there is a promise here that tradition can triumph. That patriarchy ultimately rules. The women work in the kitchen while the men talk politics and sip ouzo. There are long tentacles reaching out from Greek culture. Accepting the tentacles is not easy for the young but in the end it is everything.
The prose is focused but prosaic. Every emotion is parsed over and over. This slows the overall pace and damages any sense of impending moment. But generational struggles are repeated with fluid truths and ultimate triumphs. Greek-American (and perhaps other Middle East cultures) will recognize their lives within these tightly knit (sometimes suffocating) families. But the happy rewards of always regaining the tracks no matter what the smash-up guarantees a good read to those praying for family closeness.
The novel is flawlessly edited and takes time to reveal the Greek experience during and after World War II. There are also exquisite renderings of Greek Orthodox Christianity in the regality of its churches, the riches of the vestments and raiments and the hope offered to those willing to embrace its teachings.

Long Island author Effie Kammenou is a first generation Greek-American who makes an impressive literary debut with her epic first volume of The Gift Saga with EVENTHIA'S GIFT. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Theater Arts from Hofstra University and it is obvious that she understands the magic of theater from the skills in her writing. As is very evident in reading this book her other passions include cooking and baking, skills garnered from direct lessons from her Athenian mother, and Effie serves her story with a generous dollop of authentic Greek recipes.

In a clever ploy Effie opens her book a year before the chronicle of the lives of two families unfolds - she very quietly but realistically follows our main character Anastacia into her apartment to discover her husband Jimmy with another woman! And so the synopsis of this book opens the following year: `In the year 1956, Anastacia Fotopoulos finds herself pregnant and betrayed, fleeing from a bad marriage. With the love and support of her dear friends Stavros and Soula Papadakis, Ana is able to face the challenges of single motherhood. Left with emotional wounds, she resists her growing affection for Alexandros Giannakos, an old acquaintance. But his persistence and unconditional love for Ana and her child is eventually rewarded and his love is returned. In a misguided, but well-intentioned effort to protect the ones they love, both Ana and Alex keep secrets - ones that could threaten the delicate balance of their family. The story continues in the 1970's as Dean and Demi Papadakis, and Sophia Giannakos attempt to negotiate between two cultures. Now Greek-American teenagers, Sophia and Dean, who have shared a special connection since childhood, become lovers. We learn more about Greek culture (and cuisine!), about the plight of immigrants, and about the solidification of friendships - and then we transfer to life in New York and the riches are equal, just different. And along the way we are treated to recipes for Keftethes, Tzatziki Sauce, Pastitsio, B�chamel sauce, Kourabiethes, Tiropita, Avgolemono Soup and more - all directly related to the flow of the story.

Effie's ability to recreate war times (1943 and the Nazi deportations), the flavor to the 1950s and the spunk of the 1970s and ending it in the late 1990s makes her book much more that `memoir' type story - It is enhanced historical fiction and that makes of a wonderfully solid read. For those concerned about the title - `Evanthia's gift' is the ring of the grandmother - an heirloom passed down through generations. First book? My Favorite Read of the Summer

ROMANCE, HISTORY, FAMILY, FRIENDSHIP, LOVE, LOYALTY, BETRAYAL, RELIGION, CULTURE, MORAL CONFLICT, PAIN, JOY, SUFFERING, SHOCKING REVELATIONS!

Don't be fooled into thinking this is a woman's book. There is something for everyone. I was drawn into this story within the first few pages. Each character was so articulately developed from visual appearance to personality.

The author’s wonderful use of language and imagery gave such clarity to each character that it is as if a movie was playing in my head. This story invoked various emotions. I caught myself gasping, crying, laughing, and screaming out loud at one particular character. Not only does this story tug at your head strings but it was enriching and educating.

Many times while reading a novel you need to be a patient reader. At points a book can drag a bit until you have your answers satisfied. This book never drags, you are immediately satisfied. I became so vested in these character that when this story ended I felt as if I had lost my friends.

The epilogue made me so happy and anxious to reunite with my “friends” in the next book!

Kindle Edition is Very Handy

Because it's difficult to have a book with me all of the time, it's handy to have the Kindle edition whenever I need to study for the upcoming CSW exam. Of course it's not as functional as a real workbook (no ability to fold pages, make notes in the margins, etc.), but it's very handy during those times when you just need to study and only your phone is available.

A fantastic read whether you are preparing for certification or not. It provides a great review of grapes, terroir and winemaking, covers the wine regions of the world and includes several maps that can be easily viewed on a tablet. A native Cincinnatian, like myself, moral philosopher Bernard Gert has been the only author who has defined morality in a way that is not only understandable but profoundly affecting and real. A book to be read slowly, taking notes, absorbing every notion or explanation put forward by the author. Gert died in 2011 but his writings will remain as a pillar of our understanding of what is right or wrong without resorting to supernatural beings, just looking inside ourselves for what rules and ideals will diminish suffering, pain, and evil.

If you are interested in reading about morality in a manner that is easy to understand and that seems to make sense, this is a good book to read. His idea that morality should be presented in a manner that the public can easily understand is admirable. Too often authors present ideas in a manner too dificult for the "lay person" to understand. This book is a pleasant read on morality.

Morality : Its Nature and Justification

In this book Bernard Gert takes a new approach to ethical theory, abandoning the old stance of special or unique knowledge of morality. Instead he seeks to discover and justify the moral rules by examining our moral judgements. Using this method he captures morality and its rules to a degree not before seen. I cannot recommend highly enough reading this text.
