Excellent reference book for design engineer

This is a wonderfull book intended for people involved in the design of large hydraulic gates systems. This book treats of different types of gates and valves, their strengths, weaknesses and suitability for your application. This book has a good section about gate vibrations, excitation frequencies calculations and design guidelines to avoid them. I am involved in designing large gates system for major hydro power companies in North America and this book has been and still is of great help to me.

Good book (especially for the Java Developer learning Scala)

Good book. It starts with a coverage of the syntax and mechanics of the scala language and moves on to cover functional programming and concurrent programming in scala. This would be a good book for anyone coming from Java to work through. For the absolute beginner (to Scala), a couple of readings may be in order.

The book is great for a novice java developer or a scala beginner. It provides a run down of all the language features and nuances. I did not learn anything new or different than what I have seen in Venkat's videos on youtube and highly recommend Scala for the impatient as an alternative to this book. Watch Venkat's scala videos on youtube instead of buying this book for a steep price.

About the Author
Luc Ferry teaches at the Sorbonne and at the University of Caen in France. He is the author or coauthor of seven previous books published by the University of Chicago Press, including most recently The New Ecological Order.

Great Commentary on Rozsa's Ben-Hur Score

This book elicits on-the-money details regarding Rozsa's composition aesthetic. While it does reiterate information already documented in Rozsa's autobiography, A Double Life, it does supply additional information for those of us who are avid fans of his work. The only negative is that it doesn't contain any full orchestral excerpts. I long for the day when the full orchestral score will be made available for study.

A Pleasant "Surprise"

My first time reading a book like this; I was pleasantly surprised. Great change of pace from predictable plots and one dimensional characters--the dialogue is the most realistic I've read in quite a while. Melissa, not a bored wife but a woman whose marriage is missing the passion she craves, loves her husband, and he loves her. But they both know it isn't growing. Melissa meets Vern, a hard case biker who is used to getting what he wants, and against her better judgement, Melissa is drawn to him. He's exactly the kind of guy she used to go for, and she almost can't help herself. The whole situation is well set up and believable. I bet many readers will recognize themselves or their friends as having gone through this.
When her husband finds out, he surprises her--I won't spoil it--in a way that manages to both simplify and complicate things for Melissa.
The story ends semi resolved, another surprise. I'm definitely going to get book 2.

Looking forward to more from this author...

The great thing about this book is the author takes his/her(?) time to develop and expand these characters from the beginning. The journey of them going from a regular couple to exploring the hotwife lifestyle is deliberate and effective. Melissa and Richard have their problems but its not so severe that you don't want to see them work through it. A certain scene near the end involving a character named Vern might seem a bit too much but I bought it. Melissa and Richard's reaction to it was well earned by that point.

Overall a very satisfying read and I'm looking forward to the second part of this story.

nice try

despite the good idea for this book and many relevant thoughts, John Dunn manages to put many simple things in an extremely complicated manner, with sentences so long and complex, that one should sometimes doubt that this book is recommended for the general reader. Often jumping from one doubtful philosophical concept to another and thereby constantly referring to theorists whose ideas lead to further digressions, it is often hard to follow John Dunn in his line of thought. As to the Tribune's review "Dunn writes like Mozart", I'm sure this particular journalist had no idea about classical music.
