A book that children (and adults) can easily get lost in!

The art of spying and secret identities is one of those typical and wonderfully creative childhood fantasies. With SPYOLOGY, young people now have a fun and fascinating introduction and guide to the fantasy. This large book is chock-a-block full of information, games and stories to inspire and challenge. Like all the volumes in the 'Ologies series, readers will come across fantastic illustrations and flaps and pockets galore in these pages. The red jewel on the cover is even a "magnifying filter decoder" that can be used to find hidden messages and pictures in the book.

SPYOLOGY, the publisher tells us, is actually a declassified document. It was the book of a spy named "Spencer Blake" on a top-secret mission that no nation will claim. The first thing spies-in-training will find is the mission he received, still in the envelope marked "top secret."

Mixed in with Blake's notes is information on a variety of spycraft topics such as secret intelligence organizations, disguises, surveillance, codes, information gathering, gadgets, the history of spying and much more. There are several short case studies, spy glasses for disguise tucked neatly in a pocket, paper clues and pieces of ephemera. There are also codes to crack and secret messages, notes and letters to and from Spencer Blake, bills of counterfeit money and a wheel to decipher codex codes.

Created a serious collector

I got this for my boyfriend's 7-year-old. It was his first Ologies book and he couldn't love it more. He's able to figure out some of the really awesome codes and puzzles but not most (I would imagine most kids under 10 would need at least a little help.) He enjoys all the fiddly stuff the series is famous for. Six months later and he's not technically read the book from front to back, but it's easily his favorite. As far as he's concerned, just owning this very official-and-expensive-looking volume is enough to make him feel like he's privy to insider information. He finds great fun in wondering if the stuff is real or not, and has begged and begged for more Ologies. (Dragonology, Mythology, and Egyptology are waiting to be opened for his 8th birthday.) Ologies books are worth the money, and an easy no-brainer gift if you happen to know the kid's interests.

I thought this might be a little too easy for my 11 year old, but he loved the book. I thought he might read through it once and be done, but he's gone back to it several times to re-read codes and the cool hidden case in the book. It's really clever--he's not one to read for fun, so it's great to see him poring over a book on his own volition.

perceptive and interesting

This is the only substantive biography of Monroe by someone who was a contemporary and who interviewed her and many others in her life in the mid to late 1950s. Because it was published before she died, it isn't colored by that knowledge. The author sees her as a real person, a highly skilled actress, and a movie star.

He attributes her lateness to hostility that she couldn't express otherwise. He talks about her acting talent and her quest to be respected. He shows her narcissism, like that of other stars. He demonstrates that early in her career she wasn't satisfied to be perceived only as a blonde bombshell.

It is circumspect in some ways, downplaying the drugs, mental illness and rages. Published in 1960, it was amended to include her divorce from Miller. Well worth reading.

Great book! I am so glad you found this out-of-print book. I got the suggestion from another out-of-print book you found for me "Marilyn Monroe" by Norman Mailer. Both books were great, but this one talks alot about her beginning. I couldn't put it down. It was very interesting. Some of her books written about her say some demeaning things about her past, but this one seems very true to her life. I think because some of it was written when she was still alive and the author actually new her.
I also would like to give you a compliment on Amazon.com customer service. You are always very professional and I have never had any problems with the books I order. Thank you for your service. I probably will always order books or VHS tapes from you. Thank you again for everything!

A good primer for the quant newbie

So nearly four and half years after writing the first review of Dr Chan's first book I am back again writing the first review for his second.

Things to note:

1. All the examples in the book are again in MATLAB, so if you don't have MATLAB you will be at a disadvantage.

2. Whilst the title of the book includes the phrase Algorithmic Trading. It, like the first book, doesn't actually show you how to connect a MATLAB model or system to the market so it can run as an algorithmic trading platform. This was a criticism of the first book. However, if you Google "MATLAB as an Automated Execution System" you'll find a paper that Dr Chan wrote that shows you how to connect MATLAB to Interactive Brokers via a third party MATLAB interface.

3. Whilst the title doesn't use the word quant, be assured the models are again from the quant school. Readers from the TA school of school of oscillators, Gann, MACD etc are not catered for.

Now the book itself:

In the introduction Dr Chan makes it clear the book contains prototype strategies. The book isn't a collection of "strategy recipes" (his term) rather it's about why some strategies should work and how we can look to test and refine them. For each presented strategy we are given a model using MATLAB code. The code is only a snippet; you need to go to Dr Chan's website for the full code.

Many of the models will need further work to accommodate the reader's circumstances, but Dr Chan is clear that he isn't presenting complete models. The book is essentially about why certain approaches to the market should work in theory given the "maths" and what we know about market operations.

Many of the discussed strategies will be familiar to readers of Dr Chan's blog and his first book. The main division in the book is between mean reversion and momentum strategies, with mean reversion getting the greatest attention.

Dr Chan highlights the challenges facing traders of mean reversion, particularly those focusing on pure stock pairs, his preference now is more towards ETFs.

As you come to expect from Dr Chan his theories are well supported by maths and any reader will get a good primer on stationarity, cointegration, dickey fuller test and the Hurst Exponent.

My Summary:

I devoured the first book and spent many hours coding and testing the ideas that were presented. This time around I felt there isn't much new content for a reader or practitioner with a reasonable interest in pair trading, basket trading or a quant approach to momentum trading.

If you haven't read the first book, then this is a better book. It has been updated to reflect the market conditions of the last few years, plus there are greater descriptions of the theory behind why some of these quant models work and ways in which we should look to improve them. So in effect it is an ideal primer for the quant newbie.

As a standalone book and with the knowledge the ideal reader is quant focused then the book is a four.

Readers who already have the first book and maintain an interest in quant will probably feel a little short changed this time around.

An alternate title: How to Create Winning Strategies and Their Rationale

Makes you think about what you are really trying to do. Relatively technical, calculus is a good thing to understand. It does not try and sell you trading strategies or systems, but methods and the underlying discipline to achieve good strategies. I like this book. E. Chan is honest, open, and understandable. the book does not hold your hand but points in the right direction. If you are trying to design a system, this offers many good mean to do so.

Worth reading but needs to be supplemented with other books

Good trading ideas, explained clearly and with good mathematical justification. It's a short book though, and important topics like risk management are not really covered in depth.

Great book. Reading it for a class on the Revolution. Good overview of the situation just prior to and the events leading into the revolution. The society was so different from my frame of mind, it is important to see how things were structured then as a basis for what they were trying to change. If you want to learn about the revolution, this a good book to start with.

Sensual - Very highly recommended

Devotion to the woman who treated them as a mother motivates three handsome bachelors to find wives quickly in Eileen Wilk's Tall, Dark, & Eligible miniseries. Ada's experimental treatment is exorbitantly expensive, but they'll do anything to prolong her life. To pay for her treatment, they must fulfill the rules of their trust. Jacob West, nicknamed the Iceman, promises to be the first brother to marry. Now he just has to find a bride. Too bad the first woman he asks turns him down. But his new assistant is promising.
Claire McGuire, the woman rumored to have driven Ken Lawrence mad, accepts the temporary position as Jacob's assistant. Maybe the mansion's outstanding security system will keep her safe. Memories of the scandal, the gossip, and the trial haunt her. But knowing events could repeat themselves keeps her ever vigilant. She finds her boss to be a highhanded, irritatingly sexy man, and now she can't help wondering just how much danger she's living with as well.
The debut of Tall, Dark, & Eligible miniseries JACOB'S PROPOSAL demonstrates author Eileen Wilks' remarkable skill. With a deft touch she combines romance and danger, forcing her characters to reevaluate their priorities and the their feelings. Sensuality plays a strong role, entangling these characters in memorable play of emotions. Very highly recommended.

Good beat, but just couldn't dance to it.

Get married, inherit the money, and help the woman who raised you live for a few more years. Only, in the middle of the plan, the unexpected happens. You find yourself in love.
It sounded great on the back of the book. It even sounded great for the first few chapters. And everyone else is right - Jacob is a hero's hero. Strong, competant, rich. He takes in strays, makes them well, and sends them on their way. Strength with compassion.
Where I get caught is with Claire. I just didn't like her. She was weak. She ran away from her problems. She married Jacob, a complete stranger, to protect her. She avoided further scandal and sheltered herself away from life.
She doesn't come to Jacob as a woman on her own. She's needy. Dependant upon him to protect her (which, by the way, he doesn't do very well).
It was a decent read with a good plot. But without being able to identify with the heroine, the book was just flat for me.

Fabulous!

Eileen Wilks gives us another page turner in Jacob's Proposal. Once again Wilks has gifted us with a big book in a short format. Jacob is used to winning in the boardroom, and when one prospective bride turns him down, he sets his sights with ruthless intent on prospect number two. But Claire doesn't want to get married, she just needs a safe place to live...
temporarily. Sparks fly and the heat index rises as Jacob pursues Claire with the same intensity and focus of purpose he uses in business.
I can't wait to see what's in store for Luke and Michael!

A Great Adult ESL Level One Textbook

If you are looking for one book that does it all, this is it. Don't confuse this book with "Side-by-Side" just because it has the same author. It is an entirely different beast and everything "Side-by-Side" is not. I use this book as a main textbook with community ed ESL classes and as a supplemental textbook with some workplace ESL classes. My level one students loved this book so much that all the other level one classes at our site gave up their textbooks and switched to this one. It presents the material in appropriate, manageable chunks and it progresses through topics which are extremely appropriate for adults. It's organization is excellent, varying the skills used, and each lesson leaves students feeling like they are learning. This is a good general textbook including conversation, listening, speaking, grammar, TPR, and writing activities. It is a general ESL textbook and not a literacy textbook, however, so for students with low L1 literacy, I supplement this textbook with Molinsky's book "Access" and Linda Mrowicki's book "Pre-reading Resource Book". I have also used Mrowicki's "First Words in English", and "Starting to Read" (Linmore Publishing) as companion texts or as supplemental texts, depending on the class.

He is currently working for the propulsion systems engineering department of Lufthansa Technik

He holds a commercial pilot's licence with an IFR rating (CPL(A)/IR) and a flight instructor training.

Great Resource - Wish I Had It Before

This book is a great resource for covering aero material concisely. I've seen tomes that have covered less useful information. I wish I'd had it before doing aero work. Only a few chapters (e.g., icing) appeared rushed or too brief, but the others make up for them. If you're likely to be starting in working with controls software related to aero or aero-derivatives, this is a great place to start.
