About the Author
Talat S. Halman is a leading translator of Turkish literature into English. Before establishing the Department of Turkish Literature at Bilkent University, Ankara, he taught at Columbia University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and New York University. Halman is author and editor of more than sixty books, including Contemporary Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Drama, and Suleyman the Magnificent Poet. He is editor of the Journal of Turkish Literature.

Jayne L. Warner is director of research at the Institute for Aegean Prehistory in Greenwich, Connecticut.

A beautiful book in Abstract Algebra

"Abstract Algebra" is one of the most important field in mathematics. This book start with some really interesting & understandable examples. The most beautiful part of this book is the Galois Theorem & insolvability of the quintic(the "final" goal), which the example illustracte many confusing that one may get while reading the theorem. However, I stil wish there are more examples in the end of every important theory & ideas. Besides that, it is a pleasure of reading it!

Still Using it after 36 years

Having taken Algebra (e.g, using van der Warden, Herstein, Lang, MacLane etc) courses in1950's, I found Fraleigh's delightful and informative book the one I continually refer to (still have my 1968 copy) for 'tune ups'. His style is that of a chalk covered tutor/mentor/ friend standing next to you to grasp inductively algebraic mental metaphors which allow you to further grasp their elaborations from Topolgy to Topos. His humor pervades the book (e.g. p11"..e) Mathematicians are eager to have some ambiguity in their work so that it has a better chance of being right [grin]).

Never having had the honor to meet him in person may I use this review to thank him for his pedagogical gem.

1st Course in Abstract

Fraleigh does a great job writing a book that is generally easy to follow.

There is a big difference between the 6th and 7th edition, notably the change of sections and chapters. This has caused some issue for me considering my professor chose the 7th edition.

One could comment that there are not enough examples for many of the theorems or corollaries but I believe a strong part of this book assumes that some of the conclusions YOU the reader need to come to on your own, i.e. by doing some of the problems.

Oh geez, I could barely finish this one. The only good part was when Kristy & Mitch got together. Other than that, it was a disaster! I just didn't care for all the crazy characters in this book!

Totally Loved this Book

If you like off-the-wall comedy along with romance and suspense...read this book! Robyn Peterman has a way with words. This book had me in stitches. Several times I laughed so hard I cried. The suspense was such that I couldn't put the book down. You need to read "How Hard Can it Be" to get some of the references in this book. However, it would still be funny even if you don't. I have read 3 of Robyn's books (How Hard Can It Be, Fashionably Dead, and Size Matters) and I cannot wait to read another.
