Jonathan was a naive eighteen-year-old who had just finished school. His cousin Andy suggested they fly to Israel in order to experience life on a kibbutz as a 'volunteer'. Jonathan had never even heard the word kibbutz and he knew very little about Israel, but he agreed to take part in the adventure and made the necessary arrangements. He arrived at a fortified settlement in the Upper Galilee, surrounded by a high fence and rolls of barbed wire, called Kibbutz Dafna. It was nestled at the top of the Hula Valley, in the shadow of the spectacular snow-capped peak of Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights. He was allocated a thin, iron-framed bed under a window in a small, filthy room that he shared with three other English men - and colonies of ants and fast-running cockroaches. Jonathan's first impressions were not promising. The food was awful and he had absolutely nothing in common with anyone at the kibbutz. He was set to work on night shifts in a bleak factory, on some dangerous and arcane machinery. He'd never worked in a factory before. He'd never worked shifts before. He hated it. He struggled with the physically demanding and unpleasant work, and was hopeless at it. He realised he had set himself a target of staying there for six months, which seemed like an awful prospect. Unable to face the ignominy and embarrassment of running home in the first week, he decided he must do his best, and try to overcome adversity. Kibbutz Virgin is his story. Read on as Jonathan experiences danger when caught in cross-border conflict between Lebanon and Syria, romance as he shacks up with an American girl called Chrissie, and adventure as he tries some not-so-legal substances. Kibbutz Virgin will appeal to fans of travel writing and those interested in Middle Eastern history. Jonathan Nicholas, who published Hospital Beat in 2011 with Matador, has been inspired by Dirk Bogarde.

Loved it, can't wait for his next book!

I discovered "Kibbutz Virgin" while doing genealogy research about my distant cousins who were founders of Kibbutz Dafna in the 1940s, in pre-state Palestine. I first visited Dafna about a year before Jonathan's time there, and shared many of the same experiences.

However, I was a visitor, and mingled mainly with my family and other kibbutzniks, and not the volunteers, who were generally regarded as hash-smoking hippies. I often wondered why non-Jewish, non-ideological teenagers from around the world would volunteer to work in an Israeli socialist community, and what their experience was like.

"Kibbutz Virgin" answered my questions in an engaging and entertaining way, and evoked a lot of nostalgia for my time in Dafna and the surrounding area. I believe that anyone who spent time in a kibbutz in the late 1970s, as either a visitor or volunteer, would enjoy this book, as would anyone curious about what the experience was like.

I can't wait for the author to write a book about Lincolnshire, where my wife's family is from. Jonathan's blend of keen perception and quirky outlook make for very entertaining reading!

A great trip back to a wonderful time!

I loved this book, & recommend it to anyone who has ever worked as a volunteer on a kibbutz in Israel, or ever wanted to or want to understand what people were doing, going off to Israel in their youth to work on a Kibbutz?!

Reading this book took me back
not just to when Jonathan was 18, but it invoked my own memories of being 18 on a kibbutz (which just happened to be the same kibbutz actually, 20yrs later though). I'm sure that anyone who holds their kibbutz experience close to their heart can identify with Jonathan's experiences. This book made me laugh, reminisce & shed tears in memory of a wonderful experience, his & my own. I too have much gratitude to Kibbutz Dafna & it's Kibbutzniks for giving so many young people a life changing experience of living & working in Israel. Toda raba

Terrific Story

I spent time on a kibbutz in the late 70's and this book captures that experience brilliantly. Life on a kibbutz is so unique -- eating meals with often dozens of other people, working at sometimes menial jobs (like in the kitchen, peeling kilos of onions, loading the dishwasher) side by side with people from around the world. Buying up cheap grog and cigarettes in the Kibbutz shop, in preparation for partying (which was often). Learning about the Israeli outlook on life from the people themselves. Making life-long friendships. This book covers it all and the illustrations help bring the experience to life. I don't know if young people still undertake to travel in Israel and stay on a kibbutz, but I often cite it as one of the best journeys I've ever taken and Kibbutz Virgin would be my number one choice as a "travel guide" for anyone setting out to do just that.Kibbutz Virgin

Fantastic Book

They were going to throw this away from my local school library before I saved it from the trashcan. It truly is a fantastic, comprehensive book. While there is not much technical depth, it is a truly comprehensive account of the development of rocketry, from the ancient Chinese and gun powder, until a quarter of the way into the development of the Shuttle (it was published in 1978). A fantastic book filled with really interesting development. Don't be fooled by the cover, it doesn't just concentrate on the space program--it covers every sort of rocket (ICBMs, sounding rockets, etc.).

Fundamentals of Veterinary Clinical Pathology

This is an excellent addition to the short list of available Veterinary Clinical Pathology textbooks. It is a comprehensive compilation of essential information for both large and small animal clinical pathology written in outline form, but with very readable text. I recommend it as an essential textbook for all veterinary interns, medicine and oncology residents, clinical and anatomic pathology residents, and veterinary libraries. It will be a valuable reference for veterinary students and should be added to a veterinary practitioner's library. I compliment the authors on their efforts!

About the Author
Robert D. Barr, PhD, is recognized as one of the nation's leading experts on reaching and teaching children of poverty and minority students and helping high-poverty schools become high-performing ones. He is an educator, speaker, author, and emeritus analyst with the Boise State University Center for School Improvement. Bob has keynoted hundreds of state, regional, national, and international conferences and has provided workshops for schools, school districts, and state departments of education in every area of the United States. He has helped high-poverty schools in more than forty states improve student performance.

Escaping poverty and realizing the American dream are a part of Bob's personal story. His grandparents were migrant workers, and the overriding values of his family were hard work, thrift, and the abiding belief that if you kept at it, life would get better. When Bob was in the fifth grade, he cashed in his school banking account so the family could use the $48.00 to buy a mule. Through hard work and sacrifice, his parents saved enough to buy an acre of land, then eight acres, and finally, their dream, a 150-acre ranch in the cedar breaks and rolling hills of Glen Rose, Texas.

Bob has been selected for the National School Boards Association's prestigious Meet the Expert sessions at their national conferences twelve times and has received three national awards for Distinguished Achievement. He has been a guest on the PBS program Firing Line, ABC Evening News, and the Fox television show The O'Reilly Factor and has been quoted in The New York Times, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal. In addition, he has provided expert testimony to the U.S. Congress and a number of state legislatures and often serves as an expert trial witness. Bob has served as professor and director of teacher education at Indiana University, dean of the Oregon State University College of Education, and dean of the Boise State University College of Education.

Emily L. Gibson, EdD, has worked in rural, high-poverty schools since she began teaching in 1992. Her research interests include educating children from poverty, equity and access to quality education, differentiated instruction, school improvement, writing instruction, and classroom and school community. A fellow of the National Writing Project, since 1997 Emily has provided regular professional development in writing instruction for K-12 teachers as a teacher-consultant with the Redwood Writing Project. In 2002, she started Blue Heron Middle School, a charter school for students in grades 6-8 who were struggling to find success in more traditional middle-school settings.

Raised primarily by a single mom with health issues, Emily grew up on welfare, AFDC, and Medi-Cal, yet her childhood home was filled with laughter, creativity, and a passion for learning. But school was not a place where she felt belonging, hope, or safety. Instead, she experienced bullying and the social stigma that came with being a low-income child. She made it through high school with the help of her biology teacher, who called her Dr. Gibson, and her equine friends at a stable down the road, who taught her about hard work, responsibility, and love. During her high school years, she mucked stalls, carried feed, brushed horses, cleaned tack, and rode in the pacific coast rain. Working two jobs, she put herself through college.

Emily's doctoral work focused on parent and student perceptions of differentiated instruction and charter schools. She has also earned a second BA in Psychology and an MA in education with an emphasis on differentiation, brain-based instruction, and parent involvement.Emily is the co-author of Graduate School Learning Curves: McNair Scholars' Postbaccalaureate Transitions, with Scott Willison, PhD, published in Equity & Excellence

Brilliant, through provoking

This is a "must-read" for anybody working in a classroom. While it is has specific relevance to cultures experiencing poverty, the truths of building a sense of hope apply to every classroom, whether in the suburbs, inner-cities, or in the classrooms of a developing country. The building blocks of a culture of hope are belong to humanity itself. Brilliant, through provoking, and ultimately practical.

About the Author
Prem Shankar Jha took an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University in 1961. He worked for the United Nations Development Programme in New York and Damascus before he returned to India to pursue a career in journalism. He has been editor of the Economic Times and Financial Express, economic editor of the Times of India and editor of the Hindustan Times. Jha has also been a visiting scholar and a visiting professor at a number of institutes, and is the author of several books.
