It needs more word-depth to go with the very descriptive images.

I love Kris Vallotton and his ministry. I bought this book without hesitation; knowing he wrote it. I must say, I was a little disappointed. I feel it lacked depth. I had to explain to my children what the book was saying {they are 6 & 8 and know a lot about the Lord}. I felt like the book could have been so much more as a story, instead of a rhyme. I felt it a little limited. It's sad and graphic in the middle and needs depth to help the children really understand what is going on. And who is the guy that sets them free? It describes nothing about him, except "they met a great fellow, who reached out with love to save them from trouble." I feel like he left out the most beautiful part- who is Jesus? The One who sets us/them free and redeems us/them back to who we/they are.
Anyway, it does have a powerful message-a story of redemption. Be prepared to help your children process/understand it.

had hoped for more

I bought this because I absolutely loved Kris Vallotton's book "The Supernatural Ways of Royalty" and I very much wanted my kids to understand the concept presented in that book. I was disappointed in that I felt that that concept was a bit vague in the book. I think the book could have been more simple and clear in its teaching to kids, or at least explained the metaphor at the end of the book in a clear way (e.g. explain who Jesus is/how we are royal/what message to take home). It seemed like it was trying too hard to rhyme instead, which I felt was totally unnecessary and even detracted from the message. Also, I was not super impressed with the illustrations - I was hoping for more of a hand-drawn look (such as in Max Lucado's children's books). As for the actual text, for some reason I just didn't like that it was written in all caps. Not a big deal, I know, but for little ones are beginning readers, I think it's helpful to have it in regular text. All in all, a wonderful and important concept -- I just feel there is room for improvement in the presentation.

I recommend for 7+ year olds

Great illustration, wish it would have been more toddler/preschool friendly. I have a 4yr and 2yr, I felt it took to harsh/strong of a turn for younger children. I would recommend for years 7/8+.
