The Trouble with Therapy: Sociology and Psychotherapy, by Peter Morrall

An increasing number of people are engaging in therapy. As a consequence there is a growing debate about the benefits of therapy and its place in global society.

In this exciting and engaging new text Peter Morrall argues that therapy should be treated with healthy scepticism and provides a compelling, contemporary, and controversial argument as to how we should construct a sceptical view.

In an engaging style akin to authors such as Oliver Burkeman, Stan Ferudi and Alain de Botton, the author offers a sociology of psychotherapy as well as placing sociology in therapy. The author explores the links between therapy and science, therapy and power, therapy and reality, madness and normality, and personal misery and the values of global society.

The author asks questions about therapy and the "therapy culture" of the modern day. Is therapy dysfunctional, arrogant, selfish, abusive, infectious, insane and deceitful?

The author illustrates different aspects of therapy using a troubled character called Heather, who undergoes therapy and features in vignettes throughout the book.

This innovative, engaging, and compelling analysis of therapy is a wake-up call about therapy. It is essential reading for anyone interested in psychotherapy, counselling, sociology or the human condition.

From "The Horror Fiction Review"
By Christine
This new collection is packed with almost as much in the way of extra goodies as it is primary goodies, so that just makes for bonus win all the way around! An intro and bonus end stories by Jen and Sylvia Soska nicely bookend the volume.

Better yet, each story opens with a personal essay by the author to explain (or warn the reader) a bit about what they’re getting themselves into. I love this kind of thing, peeks inside the mindspace where some of my favorite people hang their creative hats. If nothing else, it helps make me feel better about my own muse’s living situation!

First up, obesity! The horror, the revulsion, the shame! In the eyes of many, fatness is The Worst Thing Ever; I remember a survey showing how many women would rather lose IQ points than gain pounds (admittedly, if I could just weigh my IQ, I’d be happy …).

“Fat Slob” hearkens back to King’s “Thinner,” but in a much more painful, gooshy, squicktastic way. And, like with “Thinner,” like with Wrath James White’s “Voracious,” as horrific as it is, the really evil and insidious part is, well, wouldn’t it still be kinda tempting?

“So Much Pain, So Much Death” I’d read before in the Fresh Fear anthology, and had almost successfully forgotten how disturbing it was … but here it is again, unsettling as ever! Maybe even more so on second read, because all those shivers just came rushing right on back.

Ouija board mishaps, the perils of distracted driving, Halloween hijinks, sport/trophy hunting, Ed Gein having a garage sale, dead kittens as just the tip of the hoarder iceberg, a troubled man’s unique deadly addiction, clowns, and all manner of weirdness make their way into the mix.

And then, it’s time for the grand finale, with the “Stab the Rabbit.” Damn near everybody I’ve ever known would agree with the first half of the intro; Jessica Rabbit defined sex-on-a-plate for an entire generation. But then it gets twisted. Deliciously, deviantly twisted. Cartoon universes are awesome, with their own rules and laws of physics that may or may not apply in our own … seeing them meet, in particularly unthinkable ways, is a sick, fun-filled ride.

The same can basically be said for the whole book. Does not disappoint, especially if you’re expecting gruesome hilarity with underlying depth, pathos and insight.

Shane writes about things that most will not fear to go due to political correctness in this day and age.
By Kindle Customer
Wet and Screaming by Shane McKenzie was received direct from the publisher in exchange for this review. Well, what can you say about Shane McKenzie and his writing? Shane writes about things that most will not fear to go due to political correctness in this day and age. What made this collection of short stories stand out was the prologue to each story, which gave some insight to the thought process of the writing of the story, or not. None of the stories were too long, thus I never got dragged down by inane dialogue and none were too short that left me feeling cheated. If you like outrageous storytelling and have a strong stomach, or you know someone who does, certainly buy this book.

Shane McKenzie knocks it out of the ballpark with this horror colleciton
By Amazon Customer
This is hands down one of my all-time favorite collections of horror short stories. "You Don't Need Eyes to See Us" is quite possibly my favorite horror short of all time; it starts at the part in most horror films enter their climax and drags you into a pit of terror and buries you alive. That story reminded me, in all of the best ways, of the 1980's classic "The Gate" in its unrelenting horror unleashed on a few hapless kids.

Additional stories that jumped off the page and wrapped themselves around my brain like barbed wire include "Ed Gein's Garage Sale," "He's Just a Baby," and "Give Me Something Good to Eat," but really, there isn't a bad one in the bunch.

So, long story short, if you read one horror collection this year, "Wet and Screaming" is the one to choose.

Nombres y animales (Largo recorrido) (Spanish Edition), by Rita Indiana

As in Rita Indiana’s debut novel, Papi, it is a child’s voice—innocent, but with a certain sarcastic edge—that holds forth on a range of topics in Nombres y animales. The narrator discusses animals, music, and television, as well as—more revealingly—family, mothers and fathers, initiation, learning, and what may exist after life. The everyday and the dream-like collide in this novel that reverberates with echoes of the Caribbean and that describes what it means to come of age in that region, what it means to be a woman in Latin America, and what it means to write in the present day.

Entre Humanos y Animales
By Oscar L. Vazquez

By Samuel Rosa

La nia alemana (The German Girl Spanish edition): Novela (Atria Espanol), by Armando Lucas Correa

La niña alemana (The German Girl Spanish edition) Hannah Berlín, 1939

Mamá comienza a gritarle.

Entonces comenzaron a planificar nuestra huida.

Me sentí libre.

Comencé a temblar. Grité “¡Papá!”, pero nadie vino a rescatarme. ¡Mamá! No había vuelta a atrás.

Qué pena me da.

By Sara Andrea

Needs to be proofread better -- there were typos and words that were hyphenated in the middle of a line for no reason. Very interesting story, but sad. I felt a contrast between the hopelessness and sense of doom Hannah and her mother felt and their intelligence and financial stability that might have allowed them to fulfill that dream of making it to the US. Most of the characters were clearly and well defined, but something was lacking as to the description of Hannah's brother, Gustav, and his son, Louis. How did it affect Gustav to marry another Jewish woman, whose family situation was similar to his, and how were they affected by the Cuban Revolution in such a different way than Hannah and her mother? How did Hannah and her mother manage to keep the house after the Revolution, and live without working? How did living in Cuba affect their personalities after living in Berlin and why didn't they ever make it to NY? What were the repercussions for Captain Gustav and the crew of the Saint Louis for being kind and humane to their Jewish passengers? What was the rest of his life like? So many questions, which may some day be answered in a sequel. I couldn't put the book down while reading it.

Different views will make sense for different muscles when you look at your actual cat. The real thing won't always be picture perfect, your cat and your dissection skills will determine how each view looks. Look at all of the views before you label a muscle. The veins and arteries and vessels should match on every view though.

Pictorial Anatomy Of The Cat
By David A. Tiangco
I am a graduate teaching assistant at Old Dominion University and we use this book extensively as a reference for muscles and blood vessels. The drawings are very accurate and the text is easy to read and flows well from a dissector's viewpoint. In addition, there are simplified "road-map" type sketches to aid in understanding the branching patterns of the major blood vessels. This "catlas" has proven to be quite indispensable for our purposes.

Classic dissection guide
By Elizabeth Freedman
This lab dissection guide was written over 40 years ago, but it is still the single best guide to cat anatomy. Cats haven't changed, but modern textbook manufacturers think that their thick glossy expensive books are more appealing to today's students. They are wrong. This simple guide is filled with beautiful hand drawn illustrations that are more helpful than any photograph. I only wish it was spiral bound so I could leave it open flat while dissecting. Check out Gilbert's guide to the dogfish anatomy as well. Together they make a great set of manuals for any comparative anatomy course.
